Class news

Dear Birch Class,

I have loved being your teacher this year and although we haven't seen each other for a long time I would just like to thank you all for making my first year as a teacher so great.

I am so proud of you all this year and I have loved being your teacher. You are amazing and I wish you all the best of luck for Year 3 with Miss Hayden.

I have uploaded the pictures of your first day in year 2 below this post. Look how much you have all changed!

31.03.20 Hi there everyone. Here are two documents to inspire you, they are filled with many activities and ideas to keep you busy whilst at home. Why not email me a picture of you completing one of these activities? Miss Mulgrew.

Hello Birch Class,

I hope you are all well and enjoying the sunshine. I'm sure you are all hard at work with your home learning resources which were given to you at school/delivered to your home last week.

I am missing you all and hoping that we will all be together again soon smiley.

Don't forget to ask your grown-ups to tweet or email your work to the school and then I will be able to see your fabulous progress during this time  away from the classroom.

See you all soon!

Miss Mulgrew

P.S. Here is the link to the pirate song  that we were learning in class:

06.03.20 This morning we did some Giant African Land Snail handling! The children were very brave and excited about this fun activity. We then discussed some interesting adjectives about the snails and used these to write about this experience in our English lesson.

Happy World Book Day 2020. Thank you for helping your children bring their favourite book characters to life for this special day. The children loved talking about their costumes and explaining why they had chosen to dress up as that book character.

25.02.20 We enjoyed eating a strawberry pancake this afternoon, yum yum!

25.02.20 Mrs Marvell-Stuart taught the children a pancake day song in music this morning!

Welcome back to school!

It is the second part of the Spring term now and the children are going to be learning about a new topic based on pirates. The title of this topic is 'What does X mark?'

I hope you and your children had a lovely half term holiday and that they are all ready to come back to learn more new and exciting things!

Please remember PE kits are needed for Monday PM and Tuesday AM each week.

If you have any worries or concerns then I will be happy to speak to you at the end of the school day.

The children enjoying some end of topic activities, they made animal models and did some colouring!

Why not try using this bookmark print out when reading with your child at home, it will help them to understand what they are reading and ensure they are able to answer questions about the text.

This week we have been looking at 3D shapes, we drew smiles on the shapes to find the faces and put blue tack on the points to find the vertices. The children enjoyed working in small groups and showed good teamwork.

The children enjoyed listening to some rock music which links to our music topic "I wanna play in a band" they enjoyed clapping the rhythm in this song smiley

Birch class had so much fun playing on the new play area today!

31.01.20 This morning we had some fun with smarties while creating tally charts and block graphs!

This afternoon, we sketched animal faces and created different shades and tones with our sketching pencils.

After lunch we did some mindfulness rainbow breathing to help us feel ready and relaxed for the afternoon ahead!

28.01.20 We had a fantastic music lesson with Mrs Marvell-Stewart this morning practising our "I wanna play in a band" song.

24.01.20 We won the Womble for the tidiest KS1 classroom, well done everybody!

We now have an in-class reading rewards system. Each time a child reads they get a sticker for their reading rainbow, the more times they read the more stickers they receive. A full rainbow is 25 reads and that is when the prizes begin! I will be checking reading diaries every Friday, remember to try and read with your child as often as possible. Don't forget it's not just books;  magazines, menus, cereal boxes, game instructions etc. all count as reading.

23.01.20 In PSHE we spoke about stereotypes and that pink is not just for girls and blue is not just for boys. Here are the children playing the 'find someone who' game. They discovered that they all like different things and understand that this is ok!

Here are some of the children presenting their opinions to the rest of the class on whether or not to keep the bog baby and reasons for and against going to Annie's house.

22.01.20 We did some talk for writing work in English today, the children were working in different groups. Some were being interviewed by a police officer, another group were discussing whether or not to keep the bog baby and the final group were giving reasons for and against going to Annie's house.

In PSHE our topic is 'Growing up' we spoke about respecting other people's feelings and what 'consent' means and why it is respectful to ask if you can do something to somebody e.g. give them a hug or pick them up etc. The children did some role play activities based on scenarios that they may experience as a child in year 2.

On Tuesday 14th January, 20 children from Birch & Cedar class were chosen to take part in the KS1 multi sports festival at Charnwood college, they did so well and really enjoyed their morning!

A fun activity to start our animals topic. Children sorted pictures of animals and their babies and matched the correct vocabulary to the pictures.

Happy New Year!

Welcome back to school, I am so excited to see you all again and to continue all of the fabulous learning that we were doing before Christmas. I hope you are all feeling well rested and ready to come back smiley

A few reminders for the new year:

  • PE is on a Monday afternoon and Tuesday morning, please ensure children have their PE in school each week.

  • Please provide your child with a drink every day as we need to keep hydrated! We understand that some children do not like water therefore healthy squash is allowed.

  • Please ensure homework books are brought back by Friday so I can stick the new spellings in ready for your child to practise.

Last day treat...popcorn and a film :)

Dhyana and Jack performed some Christmas songs on the keyboard and guitar. We really enjoyed listening to them!

We had lots of fun learning about advent and making our own wreaths today.

This morning we had a lovely walk to Thorpe Acre Church. We carried out lots of exciting activities and found out what Christians beliefs are about Christmas.

We were very excited today. After lunch Mrs McLeod brought us an exciting letter that had been delivered by post to the office. It was a letter from Father Christmas. Everyone was very excited!

Here we are sewing our stars for the Christmas fair! Mrs Carter and Mr Armeni helped us :)

We have been looking at capacity and volume in maths this week :)

The children used their measuring skills to weigh out ingredients and then baked and iced space biscuits!

Our new class name is Birch. Here are the children enjoying some fun activities in their new classroom :)

It was our turn to look after the chickens. Those children who wanted to had a picture with a chicken!

Something came into the classroom during break time. The children thought it might have been the Big Bad Wolf!

Please label your child's uniform as we are getting a lot of uniform left behind in class with no name on.

Thank you

The children were very happy with their umbrella collages made from the items that they found on the natural materials hunt!

Here are the children creating their collages!

Elm class went outside to collect natural materials for a collage.

Special memories from the first day in year 2 Elm class.

Welcome to Miss Mulgrew's year 2 class page. Our class is called Elm and is inspired by the trees on our school grounds. Hopefully you might be able to find the Elm tree at some point during the year.

I hope you are able to regularly check this page as it will contain useful links and information, latest school news and most importantly a display of fantastic pictures from your child's journey throughout the year .  I will also update the windows in our classroom with any messages or reminders.

I am so excited for this year and hope you are too!
