Early Years Curriculum: key areas
Key Stage One
Children in Key Stage One work through a colour coded book band system. Once they have completed all levels they move on to a free choice of books from either the class or school library. This system is used carefully by class teachers who will assess when each child has progressed enough to move onto the next band.
Every child in Key Stage One is taught phonics. At Robert Bakewell School we use the LCP Phonics Scheme.
Key Stage Two
Every classroom in Key Stage Two has a reading area which is stocked with age appropriate books. The books are organised according to our school 'Chilli Challenge' chart. Children select their own reading book.
All children in Key Stage Two are taught spellings following the No Nonsense Spelling Scheme.
